Aghehowa not Omorodion – Nigeria-eligible Spanish striker reveals reason behind change in jersey name
Following a stir he caused on social media on Tuesday when his jersey name was revealed as Aghehowa instead of his known name, Omorodion, SD Huesca’s latest acquisition has explained the reason behind the change.
And the new Super Eagles invitee, who was unveiled on Tuesday, said his real surname is Aghehowa but he had to put Omorodion as his last name based on the advice of his agent due to pronunciation issues abroad.
But the player, born to a Nigerian father and a Spanish mother, decided to revert to his real surname following Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro’s invitation to the upcoming international friendly matches.
Explaining the development in an interview with Elegbete TV, the 21-year-old said, “Actually my last name is Aghehowa. I put Omorodion because my agent told me it would be very difficult for people abroad to pronounce Aghehowa.
So he told me to use my mother’s surname, which is Omorodion but right now I’ve decided to answer my father’s name, Aghehowa. So it’s Aghehowa not Omorodion.”
The former Atletico Madrid B player also spoke about his readiness to play for Nigeria, saying, “It’s a dream come true for me because my Dad has always wanted that, my family has always wanted that, my friends have always wanted this. So it’s a dream come true.”
Born and raised in Spain, the lanky striker affirmed that he’s ready to give his all to the Super Eagles, saying, “I’m a fast player, I’m a powerful player and I can score goals and provide assists. I want to show the fans what I can do wearing the Nigerian jersey.”
