Austria defeats Kazakhstan in UEFA Nations League
Narrow victory extends win streak to three
Goals from Baumgartner and Gregoritsch seal 2-1 victory
The Austria national football team extended their winning streak to three matches with a narrow 2-1 victory over Kazakhstan in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday.
Goals from Christoph Baumgartner and Michael Gregoritsch either side of half-time were enough to secure the win for Austria, despite a late consolation goal from Baktiyor Zainutdinov.
Austria began the match brightly and took the lead in the 20th minute when Baumgartner finished off a fine move involving Konrad Laimer and Xaver Schlager.
The hosts continued to dominate possession and chances, but they were unable to add to their lead before the break.
Kazakhstan improved after the interval and equalised in the 58th minute when Zainutdinov converted a penalty after being fouled by Stefan Posch.
However, Austria regained the lead just four minutes later when Gregoritsch headed home a cross from Marcel Sabitzer.
The visitors held on for the win, despite Kazakhstan pushing for an equaliser in the closing stages.
The victory moves Austria top of Group 3 in League B of the UEFA Nations League, while Kazakhstan remain bottom of the group.
