Beluga Whale Rescued From Russian Arctic
A beluga whale that was found wandering in a river in northern Russia has been rescued and released back into the ocean.
The whale, which is believed to be a young male, was first spotted by local residents in the Ob River in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug on 4 August.
The whale was in distress and had lost a significant amount of weight, and was struggling to find its way back to the ocean. Local authorities and volunteers worked together to capture the whale and transport it to a nearby beluga whale sanctuary.
The whale was placed in a special pool at the sanctuary, where it was given food and medical care. After a few weeks, the whale had regained its strength and was ready to be released back into the wild.
On 25 August, the whale was transported back to the Ob River and released. The whale was fitted with a tracking device so that its movements could be monitored.
The rescue of the beluga whale is a reminder of the importance of protecting marine life. Beluga whales are an endangered species, and their population is declining due to habitat loss, pollution, and climate change.
