Bird seven-for sinks South Australia as New South Wales dominate day one
New South Wales have taken a stranglehold on their Marsh Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia after a stunning day-one performance with the ball in Adelaide.
Blues paceman Chris Tremain did most of the damage, claiming figures of 7-46 from 17 overs to help skittle the hosts for 117, a score that NSW passed without loss inside 11 overs.
Resuming day two on 0-58, Daniel Hughes (57 not out) and Matthew Gilkes (58 not out) continued to pile on the runs, reaching stumps at 0-115.
The Blues will resume day three with a 228-run lead.
Earlier, SA won the toss and elected to bat on a drop-in pitch at Karen Rolton Oval, but their hopes of a strong start were quickly extinguished by Tremain and fellow seamer Liam Hatcher (3-49).
Tremain struck twice in the first over of the match to remove openers Jake Weatherald (0) and Henry Hunt (0), while Hatcher had Test star Travis Head caught behind for just 10.
SA's middle order offered little resistance, with only Nathan McSweeney (29) and Harry Nielsen (23) reaching double figures.
Tremain returned to clean up the tail, taking the final three wickets to fall to complete his seven-for.
In reply, Hughes and Gilkes batted with patience and skill to guide NSW to stumps without loss.
The pair put on a 115-run opening stand, with Hughes hitting 10 fours and a six, while Gilkes struck 10 boundaries of his own.
NSW will be looking to press their advantage on day three and push for a big first-innings total.
However, SA will need to show much more fight with the bat if they are to avoid a heavy defeat.
