Bok, All Blacks icons save French club
Former Springbok captain Victor Matfield and ex-All Blacks coach Steve Hansen played key roles
French second division club Vannes have secured their survival in the Pro D2 next season thanks to the heroics of former Springbok captain Victor Matfield and ex-All Blacks coach Steve Hansen.
Matfield, who won 127 caps for South Africa, joined Vannes as forwards coach in 2021, while Hansen, who guided the All Blacks to the 2015 World Cup title, was appointed as a consultant earlier this year.
The duo have played a key role in Vannes' turnaround this season, with the club winning seven of their last 10 matches to secure their place in the second tier of French rugby. Matfield has been praised for his work with the forwards, while Hansen has been credited with improving the team's overall game plan.
Vannes president Francois Goulard said: "We are delighted that Victor and Steve have helped us to secure our place in the Pro D2. They have both brought a wealth of experience and expertise to the club, and their impact has been clear to see." Matfield said: "I am very proud of what we have achieved this season. The players have worked incredibly hard, and the coaching staff have been excellent. We are now looking forward to the challenge of competing in the Pro D2 next season."
Hansen said: "I am very happy to have been able to help Vannes secure their place in the Pro D2. The club has a lot of potential, and I am confident that they can achieve great things in the future."
