Donald Trump Says He Will Meet With South Korea President Moon Jae-in in Coming Weeks
Trump: 'We'll Be Discussing Lots of Things'
US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he will meet with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in the coming weeks to discuss a range of issues, including the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
"We'll be discussing lots of things," Trump told reporters at the White House. "We've had a very good relationship with South Korea, and we'll be continuing that."
Moon Says He Looks Forward to Meeting Trump
Moon, in a statement released by his office, said that he looks forward to meeting with Trump and discussing ways to strengthen the US-South Korea alliance.
"I am confident that our meeting will be productive and will help us to further strengthen the US-South Korea alliance," Moon said.
Meeting Comes Amidst Stalled Denuclearization Talks
The meeting between Trump and Moon comes at a time when denuclearization talks between the US and North Korea have stalled.
Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met in Hanoi, Vietnam, in February for a second summit, but the talks ended without an agreement on how to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.
The US has said that it is willing to lift sanctions on North Korea if it denuclearizes, but North Korea has said that it will not give up its nuclear weapons until the US removes its troops from South Korea and ends its military exercises with South Korea.
