Flamengo Wins Brazil's Copa do Brasil
A hard-fought victory over Atletico Mineiro
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - December 2023 - In a thrilling match, Flamengo defeated Atletico Mineiro 2-1 to win the fifth Copa do Brasil trophy in the club's history.
The match was played in front of a sold-out crowd at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
Gabigol scores the winning goal
Flamengo took the lead in the first half through a goal from striker Gabigol. However, Atletico Mineiro equalized in the second half through a goal from midfielder Nacho Fernandez.
With the match tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time, the match went into extra time.
In extra time, Gabigol scored his second goal of the match to give Flamengo the lead.
Flamengo held on to win the match 2-1 and secure the Copa do Brasil trophy.
Flamengo's dominance in the competition
Flamengo's victory marks the club's fifth Copa do Brasil title, the most of any club in the competition's history.
Flamengo has now won the Copa do Brasil in 1990, 2006, 2013, 2022, and 2023.
The victory also gives Flamengo a berth in the 2024 Copa Libertadores, South America's top club competition.
A disappointing loss for Atletico Mineiro
For Atletico Mineiro, the loss is a disappointing end to a season that saw the club win the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A title.
Atletico Mineiro has now lost two Copa do Brasil finals in the past three years, with the loss to Flamengo coming on the heels of a 2021 defeat to Athletico Paranaense.
Despite the loss, Atletico Mineiro remains one of the top clubs in Brazil and will be looking to bounce back next season.
