Torrential rains have caused severe flooding in Spain's southern province of Málaga, leading to the death of one person and the displacement of hundreds more. The heavy downpours, which began on Saturday, have turned streets into raging rivers, submerging homes and trapping people in their cars.
According to the regional government of Andalusia, the deceased individual was a 57-year-old man who drowned in his vehicle in the town of Alhaurín el Grande. Emergency services have rescued dozens of people from flooded homes and vehicles, while hundreds more have been evacuated to shelters.
The flooding has caused widespread damage to infrastructure, with roads closed and bridges impassable. Train services between Málaga and Fuengirola have been suspended, and the airport in Málaga has also been affected by the adverse weather conditions.
The Spanish government has declared the province of Málaga a disaster zone, and the military has been deployed to assist with rescue and recovery efforts. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and pledged support for those affected by the flooding.
The heavy rains are expected to continue in the coming days, with the Spanish Meteorological Agency issuing a red alert for the province of Málaga. Residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
