Fresh Spain floods sweep away dozens of cars near Girona
Torrential rains in northeastern Spain have caused flash floods that have damaged dozens of homes and swept away dozens of cars near the city of Girona on Tuesday, local media reported.
Heavy rains triggered flooding that swept through at least seven towns in the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, and Lleida.
The Spanish national weather service issued red-level warnings for torrential rains in northeastern Catalonia.
As of 8:00 pm, the service said that more than 200 liters per square meter (53 gallons per square yard) of rain had fallen in the Girona area in the past 24 hours.
The rains caused the Ter and Fluvia rivers to overflow, flooding streets and homes in the towns of Salt, Sarria de Ter, Bescano, Celra, Sant Julia de Ramis, and Fornells de la Selva.
No injuries or deaths have been reported so far, but authorities have advised residents to stay indoors and avoid flooded areas.
The floods come just over a week after heavy rains caused flash floods in the same region, killing one person and causing widespread damage.
