Green County Man Sentenced to Jail for Boat Insurance Fraud

Defendant Pleads Guilty to Filing False Claim

Perpetrator Ordered to Pay Restitution and Serve Time Behind Bars

Monroe, WI - A Green County man has been sentenced to jail time for filing a false insurance claim involving a boat. The defendant, identified as 35-year-old John Doe, entered a guilty plea to one count of insurance fraud. According to the criminal complaint, Doe reported his boat stolen in August 2021. He then filed a claim with his insurance company for the loss of the vessel. However, investigators later determined that Doe had intentionally sunk the boat in order to collect the insurance payout. "Insurance fraud is a serious crime that costs Wisconsin consumers millions of dollars each year," said Wisconsin Insurance Commissioner Mark Afable. "We will continue to work with law enforcement to investigate and prosecute these cases." As part of his plea agreement, Doe was sentenced to serve six months in jail. He was also ordered to pay full restitution to the insurance company, totaling over $10,000. "This case is a reminder that insurance fraud is not a victimless crime," said Green County District Attorney Todd Hazelwood. "The defendant's actions not only defrauded the insurance company but also increased the cost of insurance for everyone else." The investigation into Doe's case was conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Insurance (DOI) and the Green County Sheriff's Office. The DOI's Fraud Bureau investigates all suspected cases of insurance fraud in Wisconsin. If you suspect someone is committing insurance fraud, you can report it to the DOI by calling 1-800-236-8500 or visiting the website at https://doi.wi.gov/Pages/Programs/OFI/OFI-FileComplaint.aspx.
