Huskies Return to Action, Try to Put Big Men Off Nights Behind Them
Bulldogs off to hot start
UConn men’s basketball finally returns to the court on Sunday when they’ll host Central Connecticut State at the XL Center. The Huskies are looking to bounce back from a pair of disappointing losses to open the season, including a 69-60 defeat at home to Boston College on Wednesday night.
Adama Sanogo, UConn’s leading scorer and rebounder, struggled against the Eagles, finishing with just 9 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field. Sanogo also had 7 turnovers, which tied his career high.
UConn’s big men have struggled
Sanogo wasn’t the only UConn big man to struggle against Boston College. Tyler Polley, who started at center in place of the injured Donovan Clingan, was held scoreless and had just 2 rebounds in 15 minutes of action. Akok Akok, who started at power forward, had 5 points and 2 rebounds.
The Huskies’ struggles in the post were a major factor in their loss to Boston College. UConn was outrebounded by the Eagles 39-29, and they allowed Boston College to score 18 second-chance points.
UConn hopes to get back on track against CCSU
UConn will look to get back on track against Central Connecticut State on Sunday. The Blue Devils are 2-1 this season, with wins over UMass Lowell and Maine. CCSU’s only loss came against Providence on Wednesday night.
The Blue Devils are led by senior guard Nigel Scantlebury, who is averaging 19.7 points per game. Scantlebury is a dangerous scorer who can shoot from the outside and get to the basket. He also leads CCSU in assists with 4.3 per game.
Huskies need to play better in the post
The Huskies will need to play better in the post if they want to beat Central Connecticut State. UConn needs to get more production from Sanogo and its other big men, and they need to do a better job of rebounding the basketball.
If the Huskies can get their big men going, they should be able to beat Central Connecticut State and get back on track for the season.
