Jackson Bird claims 8 wickets in Sheffield Shield clash
New South Wales quick Jackson Bird starred with the ball as the Blues claimed a dominant Sheffield Shield victory over South Australia at the Adelaide Oval.
The 36-year-old paceman took 8-68 from 29 overs as New South Wales secured a comprehensive 10-wicket win on Tuesday.
Bird removed Henry Hunt (13) in the first innings to claim his 500th first-class wicket and he collected a further seven scalps in the second innings, including the prized wickets of SA captain Travis Head (0) and former Test opener Joe Burns (5).
The victory moved New South Wales to within two points of leaders Western Australia on the Sheffield Shield ladder.
Bird's performance continues his strong start to the 2023-24 season.
He has now taken 18 wickets in three matches, including 6-27 in the first innings against Queensland in round one.
NSW teammate Kurtis Patterson was named player of the match after scoring 79 and 95 in his two innings.
The win was New South Wales' second in a row and their third from five matches this season.
They will now face Victoria in a one-day match at the SCG on Thursday before returning to Sheffield Shield action against Tasmania at Blundstone Arena on Saturday.
South Australia, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back when they host Western Australia in a one-day match at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.
