LAX security found meth-soaked clothes in student's luggage, officials say
A college student was arrested after TSA agents at LAX allegedly found her clothes soaked in liquid meth, authorities said.
The incident occurred on Thursday, Jan. 12, when the 19-year-old woman was stopped at a security checkpoint at Los Angeles International Airport, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Agents became suspicious after they noticed that the woman's suitcase felt unusually heavy, the release said. When they opened it, they allegedly found several of her clothing items saturated in a liquid that later tested positive for methamphetamine.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was arrested and turned over to the Los Angeles Police Department. She is facing charges of possession of a controlled substance, the release said.
The incident is a reminder of the importance of being aware of what you are packing in your luggage, especially when traveling by air. The TSA has strict rules about what can and cannot be brought on a plane, and passengers who violate those rules can face serious consequences.
According to the TSA website, methamphetamines are considered a dangerous drug and are not allowed in carry-on or checked baggage. Passengers who are caught with methamphetamines in their luggage may face criminal charges.
If you are traveling with any type of medication, be sure to declare it to the TSA when you go through security. You should also keep your medication in its original container and have a valid prescription from a doctor.
By following these tips, you can help to ensure that your travel experience is safe and hassle-free.
Here are some additional tips for packing your luggage:
- Pack light - The TSA has weight restrictions for both carry-on and checked baggage. If your luggage is too heavy, you may have to pay a fee.
- Pack smart - Pack your essential items in your carry-on bag, so you don't have to worry about losing them if your checked luggage is delayed or lost.
- Pack valuables separately - Keep your valuables, such as jewelry, electronics, and important documents, in a separate bag that you can keep with you at all times.
- Declare all prohibited items - Be sure to declare all prohibited items to the TSA when you go through security. This includes items such as weapons, explosives, and flammable liquids.
