Navarro: ‘We’re not going to have a Trump Cabinet’ with Thune or Cornyn leading Senate GOP
White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said that President Donald Trump will not be able to enact his agenda if Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) or Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) becomes the next leader of the Senate Republican caucus.
Navarro, a close Trump ally, told Breitbart News that Thune and Cornyn are “creatures of the Washington swamp” who would not be willing to fight for Trump’s policies.
“We’re not going to have a Trump Cabinet with either one of those guys leading the Senate Republicans,” Navarro said. “They’re both establishment hacks who would rather go along to get along than stand up for the president’s agenda.”
Thune and Cornyn are both seen as potential successors to Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who is expected to retire after the 2022 midterm elections.
Thune is the current chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, while Cornyn is the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Both Thune and Cornyn have said that they would support Trump’s agenda if they were to become the next leader of the Senate Republican caucus.
However, Navarro’s comments suggest that Trump may not be convinced by their assurances.
If Trump does not support Thune or Cornyn, it could make it difficult for either of them to win the support of their colleagues and become the next leader of the Senate Republican caucus.
