Peter Navarro Shreds Thune, Dan Abrams In Heated CNN Interview
Trump White House adviser Peter Navarro called Republican Sen. John Thune a 'Chamberlain appeaser' and CNN’s Dan Abrams a 'Clintonista' in a heated exchange on CNN’s “State of the Union” over the weekend.
The pair sparred over Navarro’s recent op-ed in the Hill in which he argued that Thune, the Senate’s No. 2 Republican, was leading a “Chamberlain-style” appeasement of China.
“Senator Thune is a Chamberlain appeaser. He wants to appease the Chinese Communist Party,” Navarro said, referring to the British prime minister who tried to appease Nazi Germany in the 1930s.
Thune has been a vocal critic of Trump’s trade war with China, and he has called for the president to take a more conciliatory approach.
CNN’s Dan Abrams pushed back against Navarro’s attacks on Thune, calling them “outrageous” and “unfair.”
“You’re calling John Thune a Chamberlain appeaser? That’s outrageous,” Abrams said. “That’s an unfair characterization of his views.”
Navarro fired back, calling Abrams a “Clintonista” and accusing him of being biased in favor of Hillary Clinton.
“You’re a Clintonista, Dan. You’re a partisan hack,” Navarro said.
The heated exchange is the latest sign of the deep divisions within the Republican Party over Trump’s trade war with China.
