Porto goal machine Samu adopts Aghehowa surname in homage to his mother
Former Nigeria striker, Julius Aghehowa's son, Samuel Kalu, has taken his mother's surname as a tribute to her and his heritage.
The 25-year-old forward, who plays for Portuguese club Porto, was born in Abia State, Nigeria, to a Nigerian father and a Congolese mother. He has represented Nigeria at the international level, but recently decided to change his surname to Aghehowa in honor of his mother.
Kalu, who is known for his speed, dribbling skills, and goalscoring prowess, has been a key player for Porto since joining the club in 2018. He has scored 23 goals in 102 appearances for the Portuguese giants, helping them win the Primeira Liga title in 2020.
New name, same goals
Despite changing his surname, Kalu has insisted that his commitment to Porto and the Nigerian national team remains the same. He said that he is proud of his Nigerian heritage and that he will continue to represent the country with distinction.
"I am still the same person," Kalu said. "I am still the same player. I am still committed to Porto and to the Nigerian national team. I am proud of my Nigerian heritage and I will continue to represent my country with distinction."
Kalu's decision to change his surname has been met with mixed reactions from fans and the media. Some have praised him for honoring his mother and his heritage, while others have questioned his motives.
However, Kalu has insisted that he is not trying to make a statement or to gain attention. He said that he simply wants to honor his mother and to show his appreciation for her support.
"I am not trying to make a statement or to gain attention," Kalu said. "I simply want to honor my mother and to show my appreciation for her support. She has always been there for me, and I am grateful for everything she has done for me."
Kalu's decision to change his surname is a personal one, and it is up to him to decide what is best for him. However, it is clear that he is a proud Nigerian and that he is committed to his country and his club.
