Puerto Rico and USVI Face Weather Warnings with Afternoon Showers, Flooding Risks, and Coastal Hazards
National Weather Service Issues Statements for Both Islands
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued weather warnings for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands (USVI), predicting afternoon showers, flooding risks, and coastal hazards. A tropical wave is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the region, increasing the likelihood of flash flooding and other water-related hazards.
Flooding Risks and Coastal Hazards
The NWS has issued a flash flood watch for Puerto Rico, effective from 2 PM AST to 11 PM AST. The USVI is under a flash flood warning until 5 PM AST. Both islands are at risk of excessive rainfall, which can lead to rapid flooding in urban areas, low-lying terrain, and near rivers and streams.
Coastal hazards are also a concern, with the NWS issuing a small craft advisory for the waters surrounding Puerto Rico and the USVI. Boaters are advised to exercise caution due to choppy seas and the potential for strong winds.
Preparation and Safety Measures
Residents of Puerto Rico and the USVI are urged to take precautions to stay safe during the expected weather event. This includes:
- Monitoring weather updates and following the instructions of local authorities.
- Avoiding flood-prone areas and driving only if necessary.
- Securing loose outdoor objects and bringing pets indoors.
- Having an emergency plan in place, including a designated meeting place and a way to contact family and friends.
The NWS emphasizes the importance of staying informed and taking necessary safety measures to minimize the risks associated with the approaching weather conditions.
