Smriti Mandhana Fails to Impress on Debut for Adelaide Strikers in WBBL
Mandhana's Debut Falls Short of Expectations
Highly-regarded Indian batter Smriti Mandhana had a disappointing debut for the Adelaide Strikers in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) on Saturday. The left-hander, who was bought by the Strikers for a record AUD 150,000 in the WBBL draft, was dismissed for a golden duck in her first innings.
Mandhana came to the crease with the Strikers struggling at 3/28 in the fourth over. However, she failed to make an impact, edging a delivery from Melbourne Stars' seamer Annabel Sutherland to wicketkeeper Elyse Villani.
Stars Dominate Strikers
The Strikers never recovered from Mandhana's early dismissal and were eventually bowled out for just 99 in 18.1 overs. The Stars then chased down the target with ease, reaching 100/2 in just 13.3 overs to secure a comfortable eight-wicket victory.
Mandhana's Poor Form Continues
Mandhana's disappointing debut for the Strikers is a continuation of her poor form in recent months. The 26-year-old has struggled to find her best form since returning from a toe injury earlier this year.
In the recently concluded Women's Asia Cup, Mandhana managed just 112 runs in four innings, with a highest score of 54. She also failed to make a significant impact in the Commonwealth Games, scoring just 85 runs in four innings.
Strikers Hope for Mandhana to Bounce Back
Despite her poor start to the WBBL season, the Strikers will be hoping that Mandhana can rediscover her form and become the key player they need to challenge for the title.
The Strikers are scheduled to face the Sydney Sixers in their next match on Tuesday, October 25.
