South Africa played terrible shots: Boucher critical despite Stubbs' brilliance
South Africa's batting order came under fire from coach Mark Boucher after they were bowled out for 154 in their first innings of the second Test against England at Old Trafford.
Opener Sarel Erwee was the only batsman to pass 50, with the rest of the top order failing to make a significant contribution.
"We played some terrible shots," said Boucher. "We didn't apply ourselves and we didn't show enough fight.
Boucher was particularly critical of Aiden Markram, who was out for a duck after playing a loose shot outside off stump.
"Aiden is a key player for us and we need him to score runs," said Boucher.
"He's got to take responsibility and start performing."
Kagiso Rabada was the pick of the South African bowlers, taking 4-61, but England ended the day on 111-2, with a lead of 257 runs.
The Proteas will need to bat much better in their second innings if they are to avoid going 2-0 down in the series.
Stubbs's brilliance
Despite the batting failure, there was one bright spot for South Africa in the form of Simon Harmer, who took 3-59.
Harmer was recalled to the side after missing the first Test and he showed why he is considered one of the best spinners in the world.
He bowled with great accuracy and control, and his three wickets were crucial in keeping England's lead to a manageable size.
