Ezra Hendrickson named as successor to Georg Heitz

Former Manchester City assistant manager Ezra Hendrickson has been appointed as the new sporting director of Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire.

Hendrickson, who spent nine years at City, will take over from Georg Heitz, who left the Fire in January to join FC Basel.

The American, who has also worked as an assistant coach with the United States national team, has signed a three-year deal with the Fire.

Hendrickson's task at Chicago Fire

Hendrickson will be tasked with overseeing all aspects of the Fire's soccer operations, including player recruitment, player development, and scouting.

The Fire have struggled in recent seasons, finishing bottom of the Eastern Conference in 2022.

Hendrickson will be hoping to turn things around at the Fire and help the club challenge for a place in the MLS playoffs.

Hendrickson's experience

Hendrickson has a wealth of experience in the game, having worked at some of the biggest clubs in the world.

As well as his time at Manchester City, Hendrickson has also worked as an assistant coach at Seattle Sounders and the Columbus Crew.

He has also been involved with the United States national team, working as an assistant coach at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Reaction to Hendrickson's appointment

Chicago Fire president and general manager Nelson Rodriguez said: "We are delighted to welcome Ezra to the Chicago Fire. He is a highly respected coach with a proven track record of success."

"Ezra's experience at some of the biggest clubs in the world will be invaluable to us as we look to build a successful team."

Hendrickson said: "I am excited to join the Chicago Fire. This is a great club with a rich history and passionate fans."

"I am looking forward to working with the players, staff, and fans to help the Fire achieve success."
