The Oscar-nominated film The Eyes of Tammy Faye is coming to Broadway.
The play will star Katie Brayben as Tammy Faye Bakker, the televangelist who became a tabloid sensation. Jessica Chastain played the role in the film, which was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including best actress for Chastain.
The play will be directed by Michael Grandage and is scheduled to open at the Palace Theatre on Broadway in October.
Elton John and Jake Shears, lead singer of the Scissor Sisters, have contributed songs to the play.
The play is based on the 2000 documentary of the same name. The documentary chronicles Bakker's rise and fall, from her humble beginnings to her marriage to Jim Bakker and their founding of the PTL Club, to her divorce from Jim and his subsequent imprisonment for fraud and rape.
Tammy Faye Bakker was a controversial figure, but she was also a complex and fascinating one. The play promises to give audiences a new perspective on her life and legacy.
Brayben is a Tony Award-nominated actress who has starred in such Broadway shows as Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and Mean Girls.
Grandage is a Tony Award-winning director whose Broadway credits include Frost/Nixon and Red.
The play is sure to be one of the most buzzed-about Broadway shows of the season. Tickets are now on sale.
