Perth Scorchers claim historic WBBL title
Scorchers defeat Strikers by 12 runs to win maiden WBBL Championship
Perth Scorchers have claimed their maiden Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) title, defeating the Adelaide Strikers by 12 runs in a thrilling final at Optus Stadium
After posting a competitive total of 5/140 from their 20 overs, thanks largely to a superb 89 from Beth Mooney, the Scorchers restricted the Strikers to 8/128 in reply.
England import Amy Jones (44) and Tahlia McGrath (36) gave the Strikers a solid start, but the Scorchers bowlers kept chipping away and eventually the required run rate became too much.
Scorchers captain Sophie Devine was named Player of the Match for her all-round performance, taking 2/24 with the ball and scoring a crucial 31 at the top of the order.
The victory is a just reward for the Scorchers, who have been one of the most consistent teams in the WBBL in recent seasons.
They finished the regular season in second place, before defeating the Sydney Sixers in the semi-final to earn a spot in the decider.
The Scorchers' success is also a testament to the strength of the WBBL, which is now one of the most competitive domestic cricket competitions in the world.
Scorchers' victory a boost for Australian cricket
The Scorchers' WBBL triumph is a major boost for Australian cricket, which is still riding high after the men's team's victory at the ICC Cricket World Cup earlier this year.
The success of the Scorchers shows that Australia is producing some of the best female cricketers in the world, and it is hoped that their success will inspire more young girls to take up the game.
The WBBL has played a major role in the development of women's cricket in Australia, and the Scorchers' victory is a further sign of the competition's strength.
