San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is recovering from a mild stroke, the team announced Tuesday.
Popovich, 73, experienced stroke symptoms Monday night and was taken to a local hospital.
He underwent an MRI and was diagnosed with a mild stroke. Popovich is expected to make a full recovery.
Popovich is in stable condition and is resting comfortably.
Assistant coach Becky Hammon will take over head coaching duties in the interim.
The Spurs are scheduled to play the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night.
Popovich, who has guided the Spurs to five NBA championships, empathized with those who have also dealt with strokes and their families in a statement released by the team.
"I'm very grateful to the doctors and nurses at the hospital for their outstanding care," Popovich wrote.
"I also want to thank my players, coaches, staff, and the entire Spurs organization for their support." "I'm looking forward to getting back to work with the team as soon as possible."
