Spurs Say Popovich's Absence Due to Mild Stroke
What Happened
The San Antonio Spurs announced that head coach Gregg Popovich is taking a leave of absence from the team due to a mild stroke. Popovich, 72, is recovering at home and is expected to make a full recovery.
Assistant coach Tim Duncan will serve as the interim head coach in Popovich's absence. This is Popovich’s 27th season as the Spurs’ head coach.
He is widely considered one of the greatest coaches in NBA history, having won five championships with the Spurs.
Statement
"Gregg is doing well and is resting comfortably at home," the Spurs said in a statement. "We support him fully in his recovery and look forward to his return to the sidelines."
Recovery
It is unclear how long Popovich will be out. Strokes can vary significantly in severity, and recovery times can vary depending on the individual.
The Spurs are hoping that Popovich will be able to return to the team in time for the playoffs, but they are not putting a timetable on his return.
In the meantime, Duncan will lead the team with the task to keep the team in contention for a playoff spot.
