Vincenzo Montella was Roma’s first choice prior to Claudio Ranieri
Montella was in advanced talks to become Roma manager before Ranieri’s appointment
Vincenzo Montella was Roma’s first choice to replace Eusebio Di Francesco as manager, before the club eventually appointed Claudio Ranieri.
Montella held talks with Roma
Montella, who was sacked by Fiorentina in April, held advanced talks with Roma about taking over at the Stadio Olimpico.
The 44-year-old was keen on the job and was Roma’s preferred candidate.
Ranieri appointed instead
However, Roma eventually decided to appoint Ranieri, who had been out of work since leaving Fulham in February.
The 67-year-old has a wealth of experience, having managed some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Chelsea, Juventus and Inter Milan.
Montella still in the running?
Montella is still in the running for the Roma job, but he is now considered to be the second choice behind Ranieri.
The former Italy international will be hoping to impress Ranieri in the coming weeks and months, and he could still be appointed as Roma manager in the future.
