Trump says intelligence officials told him sanctions will bring Iran to the negotiating table
President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that U.S. intelligence officials told him that new sanctions imposed on Iran will bring the country to the negotiating table and force its leaders to make a deal.
"Our intelligence people have informed me that Iran is hurting very badly from the sanctions that we have imposed," Trump said during a meeting with reporters in the Oval Office, " and that they want to negotiate."
The Trump administration imposed a new round of sanctions on Iran on Monday, targeting the country's oil exports and its central bank. The sanctions are the latest in a series of measures that the Trump administration has taken against Iran since Trump withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal in May 2018.
The Iranian government has said that it is not interested in negotiating with the United States and that the sanctions are illegal. However, Trump said that the sanctions are having a "devastating" effect on Iran's economy and that they will eventually force the country to come to the negotiating table.
"They're hurting very badly," Trump said. "They want to make a deal."
It is unclear whether the sanctions will actually bring Iran to the negotiating table. The Iranian government has said that it is not interested in negotiating with the United States, and it is unclear whether the sanctions will be enough to change its mind.
